The cub sat, calm and in peace with the world. Her head was filled with the whispers of the trees, whispers she found comforting, for she knew they were trees, and so was not afraid that she couldn't see them. She felt her heart thud and swell under the towering rowans and oaks and pines and birch, and she heaved a sigh.
The wind ruffled her fur, sending the white roots into view and making her seem to flow like a river. There was a bite in that air, and she correctly guessed that there was a mountain looming over the forest, watching her warily, as though afraid. Kahana felt an odd sense of power. A mountain, afraid of her?
Then she lifted her head. Of course it was. Her brother had told her correctly and she recited the words now.
"I am a wolf. The wolf is feared by all." She felt strong in that moment, like a veil had been lifted from her mind and she gave a little howl, wobbly and high, but a howl was a howl, and she was proud of it. "Fear her..." The trees whispered, and Kahana wagged her tail in silent thanks.
She pressed her nose against the rough bark of one and inhaled. She was greeted with so many scents she felt giddy; the insects hiding underneath, the groans of the many storms that had rocked the trees boughs, of the squirells clambering up it and of the countless deer rubbing their shedding antlers against it. Kahana didn't know it, but she was scenting 4oo years worth of smells. She was smelling true history in this ancient being.
She drew away and lifted her head to the breeze. It dried her eyes, but she didn't bother blinking. What did she care, she was blind anyway. Her ears went back in pleasure. It had been 9 days since her parents had died, and she hadn't eaten at all since then, so the exhilerating feeling rushing through her now was welcome, for it drove away her hunger.
Kahana felt free. She felt her birthright swirling around her like a mist. She felt alive.
